World Cup – France-Croatia
France and Croatia meet each other at the Luzhniki in the big final of the 2018 World Cup. One of these two teams will make it to the top of the world. France are aiming for their second World Cup title, while the Vatreni are playing for a first time at the final.
Didier Deschamps’ boys are almost flawless since the start of the World Cup. Except of the draw against Denmark in the group stage, France won all of their games in the tournament so far. In the knockout phase they are three from three, beating Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium. Les Bleus kept clean sheets in two of these games, proving to be very solid in defense. Some critics might say that France are not playing very attractive at the moment, but they are effective. And this is the most important thing, when you aim to to win the World Cup. In most of the cases it’s effectivness, not excitement which wins trophies.
Croatia are rewriting their history. The Balkan nation reached the World Cup final for a first time in their history. And 20 years after the 1/2-final reached in 1998, lost exactly against France. Now the Vatreni have their chance of revenge. This is the golden generation of Croatian football and everyone in the country is hoping that Zlatko Dalic’ boys can make the final step in Russia.
Can the tiredness of the Croatians be a factor in this final? That’s the question everyone is asking right now. The Vatreni played three consecutive times in the extra time during the knockout phase. You can expect that this will have some influence at their performance, but in same time this is a World Cup final, so the adrenaline and the excitement shall keep them at the best of their
France’s manager Didier Deschamps is close to writing his name in history once again. He can become the third man – after Mario Zagalo and Franz Beckenbauer – who wins the World Cup as a player and a head coach. He was the captain of the1998 French team which won the tournament for a first time.
Zlatko Dalic is the unlikely hero of this Croatian team. He replaced the sacked Ante Cacic and nobody really thought that he could lead the team to the World Cup final. But Dalic showed everyone that he’s the right man for the job, making the team unite and hungry for success.
Both teams are playing with the same formation – a 4-2-3-1 with two holding midfielders and a target man, supported by quick and mobile attackers.
Although Olivier Giroud is the man who leads France’s attack, he’s not the main figure in the French offensive unit. It’s Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe the Croatian defenders really have to be careful about. They have a lot of speed and technicality, which could trouble the Vatreni.
Meanwhile Luca Modric is the heart of this Croatian team. His creativity is a key factor for the success of the team. Supported by Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Rakitic, Modric have enough freedom to roam and do his magic.
