Germany – Mexico
Who will face Chile in the final of the Confederations Cup in Russia? It’s going to be either Germany or Mexico. These two teams will meet in a semifinal clash at the Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht in Sochi.
Last night Chile reached the final of the competition, eliminating European champion Portugal after a dramatic penalty shootout. They will have the chance to win the tournament for a first time in their history and this evening they will know the name of their opponent.
World champions Germany face Mexico in the second semifinal. Despite travelling to Russia with an experimental squad and leaving most of its stars at home, Germany managed to beat Chile for the first spot in Group B. Joachim Low’s team won its matches against Australia and Cameroon and shared the points with Chile.
Many of Germany’s biggest stars remained at home for the tournament. Instead of calling them, Joachim Low gave a chance to more unexperienced players on national level like Plattenhardt, Süle, Rudy, Demirbay, Werner and many, many more. Germany are still unbeaten in the tournament, so obviously Joachim Low could be satisfied with the performance of these players.
In the group stage Germany scored 7 goals and conceded 4, winning 7 points in the process. Their top scorers in the competition so far are Lars Stindl and Timo Werner. Both of them have scored two goals so far.
Mexico on the other hand finished second in a group with Portugal, Russia and New Zealand. The Aztecs recorded wins against Russia and New Zealand and shared the points with Portugal. They have scored 6 goals and conceded 4, also winning 7 points. Both Germany and Mexico have very similar stats in the tournament so far.
Mexico will once again rely on the goals of Javier Hernandez. Other players the German defense should be careful about are Carlos Vela and Hirving Lozano. Hector Herrera, Giovani dos Santos and Andres Guardado are expected to bring energy and power in the Mexican midfield.
